Weekly Message from Head of School 2024/9/16-2024/9/20

2024-09-21

Dear Keystonians,

Sending warm wishes to our students and teachers in 4th and 5th grade who have returned from their OEP adventures this week! Many thanks to the teachers and leaders who have worked so hard to start the school year with this incredible experience. Keystone’s Outdoor Education Program is a catalyst for helping our students (and parents!) challenge themselves as groups and individuals. Bravo!

Keystone’s Assistant Head for School Affairs, Dr. Yang Rae and I are also on an experiential learning journey this week! As you read this, we are in New York City attending meetings at the headquarters for the United Nations. We are honored that Keystone Academy has been invited to attend the Summit of the Future over the next few days.

You can read more about the summit of the future here: https://www.un.org/en/summit-of-the-future

Keystone’s participation in these high-level meetings is an important component of our strategic planning process which is framed around two major important areas of focus for our school— one of which is designing learning experiences towards our school’s hopeful vision of China and the World.

By participating in this summit, we will be able to connect with stakeholders from a range of industries around the world and be sure that our educational experience is meaningfully aligned with the most up to date thinking in the space of global peacemaking, environmental sustainability and positive futures.

The work of the United Nations has been central to Keystone’s educational efforts for years with many teachers focusing academic work on the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that student learning is applied to the world’s most pressing problems and the ones they will face in their professional beyond school.

In addition to this international conversation, we Keystone also hosted two sessions with students’ parents last week exploring the directions of our strategic plans and generating ideas for possible actions the school should be taking. These sessions were very inspiring and highlighted the incredible resourcefulness, creativity and future-focused thinking of our students’ remarkably wise parents. It pointed to the exciting role that the wisdom of our families can play as we move forward into our school’s next season of learning.

Next Friday I look forward to sharing more about this meaningful event as we begin the national holiday week. In the meantime, I wish you all a happy and healthy weekend.

Warmly,

Emily / Dr. M
