Weekly Message from Head of School 2024/10/7-2024/10/11

2024-10-11

Dear Keystonians,

I hope you all had a lovely first week back from the holiday. And what a beautiful week it has been in Beijing! This time of the year is my absolute favorite. I love the cooler mornings and the bright crisp days. Thursday afternoon it was such a treat to be out on the fields for a couple of hours for the soccer games and see the action.

Earlier in the week it was great to welcome WASC President Dr. Barry Groves to Keystone for our most recent Educational Salon. This simple format of the Educational Salons is so fun-- brief sharing from an interesting thinker followed by conversation with the audience. If you haven’t yet gotten the chance to attend, I hope to see you at the next one!

My favorite part was the final question of the night from a student. She had heard over and over again that schools need to help kids cultivate passions. She wondered: how was she supposed to find her passion? Dr. Grove's reassurance that she didn't need to commit to a life-long passion was revelatory. Lower the stakes. Your passion doesn't need to be fixed, he assured her, or connected to some future hypothetical career. Just spend some time focused on what you care about, and opportunities will unfold in ways you can never predict. He told a great story about his (now adult) son who loved drawing as a kid. The family supported that passion, and then years later in medical school, a professor saw some of his notes and sketches and it ended up with him doing some illustrations for a medical text. You never know where life will lead you-- do good work, explore, be curious, and the rest will work itself out!

This anecdote also signals the challenge when kids think that “passion” and “purpose” must line up with traditional school subjects. Most of us as adults have lots of passions, and it is the intersection and combination of them that is most interesting and impactful in our professional and personal lives.

It was a double bonus that Dr. Groves emphasized the reality that there are many pathways to success in life, and that focusing on a narrow definition of success (usually defined by admissions to a small number of colleges) doesn't serve learning or our kids' futures very well.

It's so exciting that someone with these core beliefs about education and learning is responsible for one of the most successful accrediting agencies in the world. We are proud that Keystone Academy is completing its?WASC reaccreditation process this year.

There is lots of good work ahead! Here on campus, we are enjoying one of our two campus weekends of the year. All the boarders stay on campus and enjoy a range of activities—it is always a special time to be here together.

Warmest wishes to you all,

Emily
