Weekly Message from Head of School 2023/05/07-2023/05/13

2023-05-12

Dear Keystonians,

I hope you are well! I enjoyed hearing from some of you about your insights into “assuming positive intent” over the last week. Your reflections have been heartwarming and engaging and I look forward to hearing more from you!

Speaking of listening, in December of 2022, Keystone administered its third comprehensive parent survey. The purpose of this survey was to get a sense of how parents feel about their child’s education and about the important choice that they made to send their child or children to our school as we strive towards continual improvement.

This survey also was designed to allow us to look at trends over time and assess progress on areas identified as opportunities in the last parent survey administered in 2019. First, we are so grateful for the high levels of participation in this survey. We far exceeded the response rates we needed for statistical significance with most of our families completing the survey, even in the dark days of December 2022 (remember that month!?). Following the quantitative survey, our researchers also did follow up structured interviews with individual parents to dig into emerging themes. The result of this methodology is a rich dataset that is an asset to our continual growth.

Over the course of the second semester the research team has been sharing the findings and supporting the administrative team in interpreting and plumbing this dataset for insights that can contribute to our ongoing improvements in alignment with our strategic action plan. There is lots of good news in the findings! Overall, parents are quite satisfied with the education of their children at Keystone, and areas flagged of concern in the last survey have seen remarkable improvements. And we see areas where we have both opportunities to improve parent understanding of our school program and also areas that we need to devote some thought and attention.

Next week there will be opportunities for parents to come to school to hear a summary of the findings in two separate meetings, one for primary school parents and one for secondary school parents.

  • For Primary School parents: 10:00am, Tuesday, May 16, West Lecture Hall

  • For Secondary School parents: 2:00pm, Tuesday, May 16, West Lecture Hall

In a learning community, it is important that we regularly gather feedback about how we are doing. We do that in the classroom daily, and as teachers and leaders on an annual basis. At Keystone we are driven to ask questions about how we can improve because we know the powerful role that inquiry plays in learning and growth. Individually, we commit to being people who embrace learning and improvement with curiosity and humility. Together, we see and celebrate our strengths and support each other on our learning edges as we soar to new heights, taking off from wherever we are.

Thanks to each of you for the role you play in making this an organization devoted to the power of listening and learning.

With appreciation,

Emily
