Weekly Message from Head of School 2023/06/18-2023/06/24
This week Dr. Emily McCarren shares with us a letter from Dr. Ed Shanahan, Keystone's Founding President, to the community.
Dear Keystone Community,
I cannot tell you all how thrilled it was for me, after four years of covid-absence from my beloved Keystone Academy, to be able to attend the graduation of the Class of 2023, and to join with friends and family in celebrating its achievements. And for me to have the privileged opportunity to address this accomplished class before they go off into the next stage of their remarkable educational journey was even more special! Because of how you have prepared them, I know they will continue to do well in their studies, AND I know they will continue to do good for others in the years to come.
And as we near the end of the academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the remarkable successes and accomplishments we all have achieved at Keystone Academy. It has been a year filled with major milestones and positive developments, all of which have contributed to the growth and success of our school community.
One of the highlights of this year has been the exceptional college admission results achieved by the class of 2023. Our students' hard work, dedication, and the support of our faculty and staff have all wonderfully blossomed into remarkable achievements. The college admissions success reflects the academic rigor of our program and the holistic development and preparation our students receive at Keystone Academy.
In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of our graduates, we had the pleasure of hosting our first-ever five-year alumni reunion celebration. It was a joyous occasion that allowed us to reconnect with our alumni, reminisce about their time at Keystone Academy, and celebrate their achievements since graduating. Furthermore, we took this opportunity to launch the Keystone Alumni Association, fostering lifelong connections and a powerful sense of community among our graduates.
I am further delighted to share that Keystone Academy continues to experience strong demand for enrollment. Our beautiful and purpose-built campus has become a magnet for families seeking an exceptional education for their children. This high standard of achievement and our overall academic profile, both locally and nationally, have further enhanced our stature as a leading educational institution. Moreover, we have gained global recognition for our commitment to excellence, innovation, and our unique bilingual, globally-minded education model.
And last, but certainly not least, one of the highlights of this year has been the successful Executive Head of School leadership transition from Malcom McKenzie to Emily McCarren. Malcolm, over the last decade, has been a driving force for excellence, in every quarter at Keystone; and has built a firm and universally recognized foundation for his successor, Dr. Emily McCarren, to enhance further the quality of what we do here. And she has been well groomed for this daunting task.
As Michael Latham, President of Punahou School, said in announcing Emily's appointment to Keystone, "Emily has implemented numerous innovative initiatives that have positively transformed the Academy [at Punahou] and has a remarkable track record of accomplishments.” He further stated, "For all of her accomplishments and innovations as an educator, however, it is Emily’s heart as a teacher that I respect and admire most. Emily cares deeply about teaching and learning, and her commitment has constantly shaped her work." These glowing remarks from President Latham (a full copy of which is attached) exemplify the high regard in which Emily was held at Punahou and provided a powerful indicator to our Board of Trustees of her potential to ably lead Keystone Academy into its second decade of distinction. We have not been disappointed and applaud Emily on a strong first year as Executive Head, successfully leading the school through the final leg of the global pandemic that challenged us all, and getting to know, up-close-and-personal, you all who have made this school so attractive to current and future students and their families.
As we look forward, then, to Keystone's 10th school year in 2023-2024, I am filled with excitement for the future. Our journey thus far has been marked by progress and success, and I am confident that the upcoming academic year will be no exception. With the continued dedication and expertise of our exceptional faculty and staff, we will build upon our achievements and further elevate the educational experience we provide to our students. As I said during my Commencement remarks, “Blessed are our parents, our students, our faculty and our staff!”
And so, on behalf of the Board of Keystone Academy, I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for your unwavering commitment, passion, and hard work. It is through your collective efforts that we have achieved so much this year. I am proud to be a part of this extraordinary community, and I eagerly look forward to the opportunities and successes that lie ahead.
Wishing you all a restful and rejuvenating summer break.
Warm regards,
Ed Shanahan, Founding President, Keystone Academy
Mahalo and Congratulations to Emily McCarren

President
Punahou School
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I write to share the news that Emily McCarren, Academy Principal, will be leaving Punahou School at the end of the 2021-2022 school year (summer 2022) to become Head of School for Keystone Academy, a leading K-12 independent school in Beijing, China.
Punahou has been undoubtedly strengthened during Emily’s tenure as Academy Principal, a role that she assumed in 2015. Over the past six years, Emily has implemented numerous innovative initiatives that have positively transformed the Academy. Among her major accomplishments as Principal, Emily was instrumental in the creation of G-Term, the Global Sustainability by Design courses, our partnership with the Global Online Academy, the redesign and expansion of student wellness programs in the Academy, and she has helped lead strategic planning for new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, to name just a few. Prior to her role as Academy Principal, Emily served as the Director of the Wo International Center, where she elevated the program’s profile and inspired countless students to connect across borders and cultures.
For all of her accomplishments and innovations as an educator, however, it is Emily’s heart as a teacher that I respect and admire most. Emily cares deeply about teaching and learning, and her commitment has constantly shaped her work. I will always be grateful for the way she supported the 1,750 students under her care in the Academy during this most challenging of years. At each and every unpredictable turn, Emily displayed a deep and enduring sense of responsibility for her students, faculty and staff. Together with her Assistant Principals, Deans, Academy Department Heads and Faculty, Emily worked tirelessly to ensure that our students’ health and wellbeing were cared for, that their learning continued uninterrupted, and that student life would carry on in all its richness. All the while, she supported her colleagues with compassion, optimism, and encouragement.
Clearly, Emily is ready to take the next step in her remarkable career, and I applaud her appointment as Keystone Academy’s next Head of School, effective July 1, 2022. She will succeed Keystone’s founding Head of School Mr. Malcolm McKenzie, who will retire after leading Keystone since 2014. Located in Beijing, Keystone sits squarely at the intersection of innovation and tradition, offering a bi-lingual, globally-minded education in one of the most populous and dynamic cities in the world. With her boundless energy and creativity, I am confident Emily will provide visionary and engaging leadership for Keystone’s future.
Before that happens, however, we are fortunate to have another year with Emily as we begin a search for her successor. I look forward to working closely with her in the year ahead and to celebrating her legacy here at Punahou.
Please join me in congratulating Emily on this exciting and promising new adventure for her and her family.
With gratitude and aloha,
Mike
