Weekly Message from Head of School 2023/09/03-2023/09/09
Dear Keystonians,
Greetings! Today we punctuated the end of our first full week with a meaningful all-school flag raising ceremony this morning.
It was humbling to see all our students and faculty and staff together on our beautiful field for this special moment, a very light rain fell, which cooled the temperature and symbolized our shared perseverance in the face of obstacles.
This ceremony, and the matriculation ceremony next Wednesday for our new secondary school students, including all 6th graders, are two of the meaningful ways that we use rituals and ceremonies to mark new beginnings.
Here are the short remarks I shared with our students and teachers: “What a joy for us all to be here together today connected for Keystone’s one and only 10th school year. The number 10 means perfection-- it is indeed perfect that we are all here, connected for this very special year.
As we honor the raising of China’s flag over our beautiful campus, we are celebrating connections! Connections to China’s extraordinary history and promising future, connections to the world, connections to each other, and connections to learning.
And even though 10 means perfect, I trust that we will all remember that perfection comes not from getting all the right answers, or a perfect score, but from never missing an opportunity to learn. And we must not be tempted to believe that more is better. Sometimes, doing our very best at a small thing-- like a kind gesture, or a warm connection-- is more than enough and can make all the difference. Before we raise the flag I want to remind us of ancient words from Lao Zi’s Dao De Jing that can guide our school year--
“People that are kind, I would treat with kindness. People that are not kind I would treat with kindness too. That is how kindness is acquired.”
So, with kindness and trust that we are all meant to be here connecting this year, let’s learn and grow together! We will indeed have a perfect year—perhaps the best year yet!”
It will be a wonderful year at Keystone and there is so much to look forward to. One thing that I am very excited about this year is the return of our Educational Salons. Keystone has a wonderful history of being a gathering place for great ideas. Since the founding of the school, we have gathered people for Educational Salons in which we host big thinkers in a range of disciplines, including the field of education. This year, inspired by our theme of “connection” we are bringing back our educational salons to celebrate our 10th anniversary of Keystone Academy's founding.
I hope that you will be able to join our first educational salon of the year on Thursday September 14th at 7:15 pm featuring my dear friend Professor Young Zhao-- educational thought leader and world-renowned author, scholar and speaker. It will be a lively discussion you won’t want to miss!
If you know of a speaker who would be a wonderful addition to the salon series this year, feel free to reach out to me to share your good idea!
See you soon, I hope,
Emily
