Weekly Message from Head of School 2023/10/08-2023/10/14

2023-10-13

Dear Keystonians,

Warm Friday Greetings to you. History will remember this week by the horrific outbreak of war in Israel and Gaza. The age-old conflict in the region has escalated to extremes overnight. May we all send thoughts of peace and healing and hopes for a swift end to the violence.

Educational institutions, even those far from the front lines, can experience a different kind of challenge in times of international conflict. Schools as we are charged with supporting individuals and groups of students and at the same time educating students about the nuances of history that can lead to war and other atrocities.

As an educator and a mother, I have always believed that all our children are all our children. The children of the world are our collective responsibility, a responsibility that feels even weightier and painful in times of war. In education, and in our homes, we must tend to their complex feelings about global events by listening and grounding our responses in our children's emotions. It is difficult and worthwhile work. We must remind ourselves that whatever frustration or disappointment we have with the groups or governments involved, we must never justify the types of atrocities currently unfolding. The children are ours. For the short time they are children, we can ensure they become the peacemakers of the future.

This week I have been in Nairobi, Kenya with a Keystone Academy group attending an international student conference. This experience has provided us with opportunities for learning, exploration, reflection and connection. Kenya is an amazing country full of stunning natural beauty and inspiring stories of innovation and development.

The most powerful learning for me this week has been related to how our students have demonstrated the extraordinary capacity to illuminate. During our long trip here, they discussed thoughtfully what they wanted the other delegates to learn about China from their interactions. They also discussed how they would respond when they were confronted with misunderstandings, or stereotypes about the Chinese people or China as a nation. It has been amazing to see a Keystone education in action in the thoughtfulness of our students. I am strengthened in my conviction that education is peacebuilding.

Wishing you all, and every being on the planet, peace,

Emily
