Weekly Message from Head of School 2024/4/22-2024/4/26
Dear Keystonians,
One of the highlights of this week was the visit of Nobel Laureate Professor Eric Maskin, who gave a lecture to our community on Tuesday in the PAC. Professor Maskin is a distinguished economist and mathematician who won the Nobel Prize in 2007 for his contributions to mechanism design theory. He shared his personal journey from being a math-loving kid to becoming a world-renowned scholar, and how he was inspired to pursue economics by a great professor during his early undergraduate years.
He also revealed that many of his insights in his current work come from reading widely outside of his field, and being curious about how things may be interrelated. He challenged the myth of the siloed academic and encouraged us to keep our minds open and explore different disciplines and perspectives. He humbly and clearly described how this curiosity outside of his field led to the insights that have transformed his field including the work that led to his Nobel Prize. His talk was a wonderful example of a lifelong learner.
I loved seeing our curious students interact with this intellectual giant – and he was impressed with them too. As a small mob of students escorted him to his car to head back to Boston, the dialogs continued, and the cognitive sparks were flying. This small but meaningful event was a great example of how “Learning from China and the world” happens at Keystone Academy.
In other news, this weekend begins our 10th anniversary celebrations with our Head of School Roundtable tonight at 7 pm in the PAC and the Carnival on campus on Saturday. I hope you will all come and celebrate our “New World School” and all we have achieved in the first decade of our history! Congratulations to each of you!
Warmly,
Emily
