As I sat in front of an unused piano at my friend’s house playing a sonata, I started envisioning the fate of this piano a few years later. It would remain unused until the strings no longer held tension, the pitch became inaccurate, and it was gradually forgotten. I realized that the negligence of musical instruments is widespread. Would it help if I “rescue” these instruments and give them the right not to be forgotten?

I contacted four other students who are talented in music and started the organization KeMelody. We aim to provide a home for forgotten musical instruments and repurpose them. Through an online survey, we learned why musical instruments are left out and profoundly understand why this issue persists. People have told us they only have minimal access to meaningful and in-depth music resources. Without these resources, it is difficult for a child to continue learning music. This has helped us gain new insights into the problem. We used to believe that having access to music resources and giving up on learning musical instruments were contradictory. Inspired by this understanding, we plan to create music storytelling events that are meaningful, engaging, and full of high-quality content to spread the power of music. 

We launched a campaign through online platforms and received over 20 unused instruments, including violins, flutes, French horns, recorders, and more. Many still retain the texture of their first use, but some have already been eroded by time. We repaired the damage and contacted a charity school named Dandelion School in Daxing District. We have donated the instruments to the school and repurposed their mission. The instruments are used for education at Dandelion School, and their once-forgotten fate is being rewritten into a mission as a teaching material. Children gain joy and curiosity about music through these instruments.  

Within the school, we have organized several music storytelling events. Through live performances and storytelling, we have spread the happiness music would bring. We believe that this way, more instruments can be cherished, and more people can be enthusiastic about music itself.

As a nonprofit organization that started from scratch, we have faced many unexpected challenges, but have also experienced countless warm and hopeful moments. After our first event, as we were cleaning up the venue, a young girl and her mother approached us and said, “My child absolutely loved your storytelling event. Through your storytelling, she has developed a love for classical music.” The mother added, “Now her favorite composer is Mozart!” This feedback provided great comfort at a time when we were uncertain about the quality of our events, and it motivated us to continue organizing one event after another.

Since founding this initiative, I sometimes feel fortunate to have the means to give these instruments a new home and let them serve a special purpose. We look forward to seeing the happiness on the faces of the children at Dandelion School as they play these instruments. That happiness is an invaluable treasure unique to KeyMelody. We will continue this mission, spreading the love of music to more people and granting unused instruments the right not to be forgotten.
