In a world rapidly changed by technology such as generative artificial intelligence (AI), the threads that connect humanity have grown in number but also become increasingly strained, as if the patchwork quilt that envelops us all is being stretched too far. Currently, 24-hour newsfeeds and social media are rife with reports about conflict and struggle. We find ourselves caught in a paradox, seeming both closer together and yet farther apart. It is in this strange new state that creating a sense of commonality becomes even more important than ever before. If you need proof that multiculturalism can still thrive in the world of today, look no further than this issue of the Keystone Magazine.
The stories and messages contained in Issue 11 of the Keystone Magazine all resonate with the embodiment of common humanity. Whether it is the Head of School Foreword, the Editor’s Note, or the expansive Cover Story of multicultural learning at Keystone, each work embraces the value of connectedness and open-mindedness that we hold as a school community. Global citizenship education is an integral part of Keystone’s educational program, and students and staff all collaborate to create a welcoming environment in which we can grow together. Check out some of the highlights you can look forward to in the magazine below!
Editor’s Note
In the early 1950s, renowned photographer Edward Steichen curated an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) that has been hailed as "the most extraordinary photographic exhibition ever assembled". As the exhibition draws to a close, one will encounter the renowned masterpiece "A Walk to Paradise Garden" by the esteemed war correspondent of the 20th century, W. Eugene Smith. This photograph portrays two children hand in hand, embarking upon a journey along a tree-lined forest path, leading them towards a luminous destination representing hope. A subtle label accompanying the picture proclaims, “A world on the verge of emergence beneath your very feet.”
The contents of this issue of the Keystone Magazine depict such a new world.

Foreword
If we are to build a safe and prosperous future for all on our fragile planet, we need to raise young people who are confident and proud in equal measure to being curious and humble. As you will see throughout the pages of this magazine, this combination is the recipe for deep learning, for solving yet unsolved mysteries, and creating art that has the potential to realize our transformative intention as a human species.
Exploring the Multicultural World of Keystone in the Cover Story
Why is “global citizenship education” crucial for a school?
According to the United Nations, “It is not enough for education to produce individuals who can read, write and count. Education must fully assume its central role in helping people to forge more just, peaceful, tolerant and inclusive societies.”
Simultaneously, it’s imperative to recognize that global citizenship is not inherently present but rather needs to be attained through education. Education, as Michael Oakeshott put it, is “to disentangle oneself, for a time, from the urgencies of the here and now and to listen to the conversation in which human beings forever seek to understand themselves.”
This featured cover story will take you on a journey through Keystone, exploring the global citizenship education that happens every day here through the lens of several Keystone community members from all over the world.
